Abstract: the study of human thermal comfort in outdoor spaces should be understood as a basis for climate responsive urban planning. by means of enhancing the attractiveness of open areas and by promoting outdoor activities, urban planners concerned with thermal preferences of the local population can facilitate the use of such spaces. this study analyses the thermal sensation of local dwellers in glasgow, uk, located in a temperate climate, by comparing responses from thermal comfort surveys to predictions using thermal indices used in weather forecasting (wind chill, thsw), and thermal comfort studies (pet and pmv). data were collected throughout 19 monitoring campaigns, from winter through summer 2011. for data collection, a davis vantage pro2 weather station was used, which was equipped with temperature and humidity sensors, anemometer and pyranometer. a globe thermometer was prepared for assessing the mean radiant temperature, which used a temperature data logger (tinytag-tgp-4500). results showed that the thermal indices thsw and pet were more closely related to the actual thermal sensation of respondents, suggesting that such indices can help to understand the urban climate in and around glasgow.
Formulating a researchable question: A critical step for facilitating good clinical research
Aslam Sadaf,Emmanuel Patricia
Indian Journal of Sexually Transmitted Diseases , 2010,
Abstract: Developing a researchable question is one of the challenging tasks a researcher encounters when initiating a project. Both, unanswered issues in current clinical practice or when experiences dictate alternative therapies may provoke an investigator to formulate a clinical research question. This article will assist researchers by providing step-by-step guidance on the formulation of a research question. This paper also describes PICO (population, intervention, control, and outcomes) criteria in framing a research question. Finally, we also assess the characteristics of a research question in the context of initiating a research project.

Revista Colombiana de Anestesiología , 2008,
Abstract: integral attention to patients includes obtaining all possible information about them such as demographics and personal and socio-cultural information. this study was done considering the concems that patients have regarding the two most critical events in patients? attention: anesthesia and surgery. the study was done at the fundación santa fé de bogotá on 144 patients to whom a questionnaire was given before the pre-anesthetic consultation. the questionnaire contained questions about their main fears and concems when faced with anesthesia and on what they thought regarding the skills and training of the anesthesiologist. results show that anesthesiologists are clearly recognized as doctors with a specialty. they are regarded as having the same importance as that of the surgeon. also, results show the specific fears of patients regarding being anesthetized.

From Msimbazi River Valley to Mabwepande Settlement: The Resettlement Process and Its Challenges  [PDF]

Current Urban Studies (CUS) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/cus.2019.73020
Abstract: The paper documents the resettlement process undertaken following the 2011 heavy rains in Dar es Salaam City, which adversely affected many people who lived in flood prone areas particularly in and along Msimbazi river valley. Within the resettlement process, challenges which were encountered by different actors during the resettlement process were investigated. With the use of qualitative and quantitative data, the paper shows that the resettlement of households from Msimbazi River Valley to Mabwepande followed a number of steps decided during the process with no pre-determined guidelines. The process largely centred around identifying those to be resettled, relocating them to the resettlement area and issuing alternative plots. The physical, economic, social, cultural and environmental dimensions of resettlement were less coherent in the process. Subsequently, the process resulted into both negative and positive outcomes, which are persistent until today. These include poor housing conditions, disruption of economic and income generating activities, unreliable social and technical infrastructure services, inability and or reluctance to develop the new plots and low living standards. However, high level of tenure security and certainty of being free from flood risk are some positive outcomes of the resettlement. The paper argues that the implementation of resettlement projects with no well-articulated process that takes care of the environmental, spatial, economic and social needs of the resettled population obscures the outcomes of the project. It therefore calls for caution when planning and implementing disaster led resettlement projects that necessary steps ought to be carried out to protect and enhance the wellbeing and livelihoods of those resettled apart from issuing alternative parcels of land.
Cocoyam (corms and cormels)—An underexploited food and feed resource  [PDF]

Journal of Agricultural Chemistry and Environment (JACEN) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jacen.2014.31004
Abstract: Cocoyams (old-taro: Colocasia esculenta; newtannia: Xanthosoma sagittifolium) yield corms as root crops produced in regions of tropical and subtropical developing countries. In certain countries such as Ghana, there are surpluses in production but deficits in cereals. Cocoyams are used in a range of indigenous foods. Post harvest losses are high due to mechanical damage of corms during harvest and microbial attacks on such damaged corms during storage. Cocoyams contain, on average, 25% starch (wet weight basis) with A-type structures characterized by small granule size (<1.5 μm). Non-starch polysaccharides in cocoyams confer gummy properties to the starch. However, mechanical effects of raphides—crystals of calcium oxalate and other components—produce irritation when raw corm tissue is ingested resulting in several levels of discomfort. With appropriate processing, cocoyams could be a rich source of starch for food and industrial applications and corms have potential for new product development. Stabilizing cocoyam crops and adding value could greatly improve its utilization in cocoyam producing countries.
